Construction work has formally started on HS2.
HS2 is a new high-speed railway linking up London, the Midlands, and the North, serving eight of Britain’s 10 largest cities.
Phase One of the scheme will create around 22,000 jobs – with around 7,000 jobs based in the West Midlands.
HS2 is said to be at the heart of the government’s plans to “build back better” as the UK continues to recover from the pandemic.
UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, said: "As the spine of our country’s transport network, the project will be vital in boosting connectivity between our towns and cities.
"But HS2’s transformational potential goes even further. By creating hundreds of apprenticeships and thousands of skilled jobs, HS2 will fire up economic growth and help to rebalance opportunity across this country for years to come."
